Learning through purposeful play
At the heart of the MCPS experience is a thoughtful balance of child-initiated exploration and adult-guided learning, through which children are encouraged to question, create and grow.
The classroom pods across our campuses.
At Malvern College Pre-School Hong Kong, young children develop and learn through both structured and free play, with a focus on inquiry, development and hands-on learning. Emphasis is placed on active, play-based learning with a balance of child-initiated and adult-led activities.
This is purposeful play: experiences are thoughtfully planned, observed and extended so children can build skills, knowledge, conceptual thinking and confidence while remaining active participants in their own learning.
During dedicated “Discovery Time”, children actively explore, question, create and share their ideas. They can follow an interest, test possibilities, make choices and revisit their thinking.
Teachers observe and listen carefully, then guide learning through well-timed questions, new vocabulary, added resources or an appropriate challenge. This keeps the child’s curiosity at the centre while helping learning move forward.
Three learning behaviours
Playing and Exploring
Children investigate, experience new possibilities and develop the confidence to take a chance.
Active Learning
Children concentrate, keep trying and experience the satisfaction of achieving what they set out to do.
Creating and Thinking Critically
Children develop ideas, make connections and choose their own ways to solve problems.
Explore
Curiosity and problem-solving grow as children investigate and test ideas.
Create
Imagination and self-expression develop through open-ended materials and experiences.
Collaborate
Communication and relationships strengthen as children play, negotiate and learn together.
Move
Confidence and physical development grow through active, whole-body learning.
Spaces and materials are thoughtfully designed to encourage curiosity, independence and discovery. Inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, MCPS views the environment as the “third teacher”: children encounter inviting resources, flexible spaces and meaningful opportunities to explore beyond a fixed classroom task.
Children’s ideas and progress are captured through conversations, photographs, observations and creative work. These records help teachers understand each child’s interests and development, plan meaningful next steps and share the learning journey with families.
Parents and teachers collaborate to understand and support each child at school and at home. Sharing observations helps create continuity between the child’s interests, experiences and development across both settings.
Parent takeaway
Through purposeful play, teachers prepare inspiring environments, observe with care and gently extend each child’s thinking while preserving curiosity, choice and a genuine sense of ownership.
